Houses and Homes

(2019)

As children, we instinctively draw a house the same way—a simple square, two windows, and a door—regardless of where or how we actually live. This universal image of home reflects something deeper: a longing for shelter, for safety, for belonging. Houses and Homes is a photographic monograph of Tampere’s 18th and 19th-century Finnish wooden houses, capturing a final collection of over 100 homes from its most well-known neighborhoods. Each structure, though architecturally similar, has been shaped by generations of families—altered, expanded, repainted—yet, at its core, it remains the same.

Alongside the photographs, a participatory installation invites the audience into this exploration. A black wall becomes a playground for both children and adults, a living archive, where visitors inscribe their own visions of home in white chalk. This evolving artwork shifts with each interaction, mirroring how home is both deeply personal and universally shared. We often search for it in physical spaces, yet many say home is something we carry within.
