The Dreamer

(2018)

7 min, HD, Stereo

Dreams have always fascinated humankind, remaining one of the greatest mysteries of the mind. Despite advances in science, we still do not fully understand what dreams are or why they feel so real. Like an iceberg, the subconscious mind is vast and mostly hidden, shaping our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions beneath the surface.

This experimental video explores the fragmented, nonlinear nature of dreams and how the images we choose to capture with a camera can reflect the hidden layers of our subconscious. Using handheld footage from different places and countries, shot in both black and white and color, The Dreamer mirrors the unpredictable and fluid nature of dreaming—where memories, sensations, and emotions intertwine without logic.

Meditation has long been used to access altered states of consciousness. Originating from ancient Vedic traditions, Transcendental Meditation (TM) was later revived in the 20th century as a method of reaching deeper awareness. Through TM and deep introspection, we can enter a space where reality and illusion dissolve, much like in dreams. Many meditators describe vivid subconscious imagery, revealing how closely our inner and outer worlds are connected. The Dreamer invites the viewer to step into this shifting, surreal landscape—where reality is uncertain, and meaning emerges from the spaces in between.

The Dreamer has been selected for Speculum Artium DigitalBigScreening, Trbovlje, Slovenia and for the Official Screening of iWeek Art, Media and Music at TAMK in 2019.
