Photo-Walks By The Baltic Sea (2025)

The Photo-Walks by the Baltic Sea is a participatory photography series developed through four free well-being photo-walks held in Espoo, Finland (July–October 2025). The project engaged over fifty participants aged six to sixty-five from seventeen different cultural backgrounds, using photography as a low-threshold tool to support well-being, inclusion, and social connection in public spaces. The project was fully facilitated by professional visual artist and art educator Luiza Preda and financially supported by Espoo City.

The resulting photographs form a mindful visual documentation of shared experiences along the Baltic Sea, reflecting both Espoo’s natural environment and its multicultural community. The walks created accessible spaces for intercultural encounter, presence, and reflection—without requiring prior artistic experience.

The series is presented as four virtual exhibitions within the Creative Harmony initiative, extending the project’s reach and impact by making the outcomes publicly accessible and supporting ongoing community engagement through arts and health–based activities.

*Virtual exhibitions can be easily visited via desktop or mobile down below until January 2026.

Participants’ thoughts after the photo-walk

I am really thankful for the opportunity to be part of the Photo-walk by the Baltic sea IV edition. I felt so productive yesterday physically and mentally. It's been a learning journey to exercise mindfulness through photography. And also I'm so grateful to our guide Luiza for helping us deepen our passion in taking photos and for helping us express ourselves through photography with the activities she gave us and through group activites it helped us to learn from each other and enjoy the company of each one.

-Irene

“Today I had an adventure! I love nature and photography. So when I have guidance, for me it is an excellent experience! Yes, I loved it because I was challenged to create things. Following tips and advices I was able to have fun, relax, create, and enjoy nature.

- Shkurte

My heart is filled with warmth, passion and curiosity after all of the photo walks we've had. Each season and location opened something I didn't discover before in Espoo, and brought positive social connections in addition. I loved how people grew this community and how eager everyone was to discuss ideas afterwards!

-Tetiana

“Luiza was great at making abstract concepts very approachable. She managed to structure learning around the activities of play and experimentation, with very accessible starting points. She helps you discover, on your own, the things that interest you, and creates the space for you engage with those things or learn more about them..”

-Amruth

“My body felt very warm and slow in a peaceful way during the photo-walk. When I recall my memories from this photo-walk, I have beautiful, warm, and rather quiet moments captured in my eyes and heart.”

-Ia

“Luiza succeeded to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere during the photo walk. The tasks were inspiring and gave me new insights into how to approach photography and how to look at my surroundings and find things I want to capture. I loved that among this being a meditative experience I also got practical information on photography. Luiza was supportive and made me feel safe and calm during the whole photo walk. ”

-Tuulia

“Workshops around creativity could easily end up getting stuck with technical skills and performance, blocking the actual creativeness. Loved and appreaciated Luiza's approach to photography and the creative process, which starts with letting go of 'right' and 'wrong' and being mindfully present in the moment.”

-Essi

“I felt incredibly at ease—Luiza is an amazing guide. The sense of calm I experienced while taking photos and following her gentle direction, along with the freedom I felt, was truly remarkable. I was honestly in awe after the walk, and the things we talked about have stayed with me ever since.”
