Nordic Weather Details

Field Notes from Latokaskenniitty

(2023-on-going)

Weather influences cultures and communities — how people feel, work and spend time. In Finland, weather and nature are deeply woven into everyday life, shaped by pronounced cycles of darkness and light, cold and warmth. Nordic Weather Details is a long-term macro photography exploration of Latokaskeniity nature site in Espoo, Southern Finland, observing how its living systems continuously transform through the seasons.

The project explores the idea of cyclical time, drawing on Romanian philosopher Mircea Eliade’s concept of the eternal return — the recurring cycles through which nature, and human cultures, experience renewal. As an international artist living between Finland and Romania, I approach the Nordic landscape through a cross-cultural perspective: coming from a temperate climate with more gradual seasonal transitions, I became particularly attentive to Finland’s extreme rhythms of darkness, snow, light and growth.

By slowing down and looking beyond human calendar time, the project considers Latokaskeniity as a living system with its own rhythms and temporalities. Through close observation of growth, decay and renewal, it reflects on resilience, adaptation and our relationship with the more-than-human world in a changing climate.

*The current selection below presents preliminary samples from the ongoing study. The project will be fully published in 2027.
